KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -- Two people died and eight were injured when a carousel broke down in an amusement park in Ukraine, emergency officials said Saturday.
Channel 5 television reported that the centrifuge-style carousel slammed into its supporting pole in a park in the eastern city of Luhansk on Friday.
As it continued spinning, passengers were flung away and many fell on the ground.
Two victims, a man in his early twenties and a young woman in her late teens, died on the spot from the injuries they sustained. Eight others were hospitalized.
Local authorities said the carousel was put up without official permission.
Accidents in amusement parks are frequent in Ukraine, where safety rules are often neglected and many rides are not properly checked.
