Fredricka Whitfield

Fredricka Whitfield is a news anchor for CNN/U.S. Based in the network's world headquarters in Atlanta, Whitfield anchors the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom. Whitfield also works as a correspondent for the network, reporting on breaking news events worldwide.

Since joining CNN in 2002, Whitfield has reported from the Persian Gulf region during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the debates over public displays of the Ten Commandments and arrests in the arson cases involving African-American churches in Alabama.

Before CNN, Whitfield was a correspondent for NBC News and served as an Atlanta-based correspondent for NBC Nightly News and other programs for the network including The Today Show.

Whitfield has covered such stories as the Elian Gonzalez saga, the 2000 presidential election, the summer 2001 shark attacks and the West Nile virus. Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, she has continued to cover the unfolding event as the crisis evolved from a search-and-rescue mission into a war on terrorism. She also covered the 1996 Olympics, the Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta and the subsequent search for Eric Rudolph and the refugee crisis in Macedonia during the War in Kosovo.

Before joining NBC, Whitfield was a reporter and anchor at WPLG-TV in Miami, an evening anchor for News Channel 8 in Washington, D.C., and a general assignment reporter at KTVT-TV in Dallas. Earlier, Whitfield was a general assignment reporter for WTNH in New Haven, Conn. She began her professional career as a reporter and morning anchor for WCIV in Charleston, S.C.

Whitfield has garnered multiple awards and honors for her broadcasting work, including the 1991 Groit Award, an Associated Press Award, the Society of Professional Journalists' "Rookie of the Year" Award and a Sigma Delta Chi Award. Additionally, the Associated Press honored her with its 1988 Reporter of the Year. In 2002, she was honored with Howard University’s Alumna of the Year Award.

Whitfield earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Howard University.
